Kitten Commando 2049
Design and Prototype Documentation
On this page is the final digital packet for the design and prototyping of "Kitten Commando 2048," a free-to-play mobile app for iOS and Android mobile devices.
Per the previously-approved contract three items; planned storyboards, a user flow diagram, and materials for an analog prototype, will be presented. Additional materials and information related to the game's design and implementation will also be presented.
Background
"Kitten Commando 2049" (referred to as "Kitten Commando" or "KC" ) is a "Missile Command" style interception shooter, designed for touch-based controls.
Users would take on the role of the eponymous "Kitten Commando," a common house kitten genetically augmented by the last survivors of humanity to defend them from the final onslaught of the BAD DOGS, a horde of evolved canines who, enraged by the lack of attention from humans engrossed by their mobile devices, rose up and took revenge.
The primary weapon of the BAD DOGS, the "Kamikaze Canines," are cybernetically-enhanced heads designed to fly at their target and explode on impact. As the Kitten Commando, players are tasked with shooting incoming Kamikaze Canines, who are attempting to crash into the Commando. Players must anticipate points of interception based on the Canine's speed and direction, along with the speed of the round fired by the Commando. While the Commando's ammunition would be unlimited, there is a short delay between each firing of a round, along with a longer delay when the Commando's clip empties for reloading.
Characters
Kitten Commando
A genetically augmented supercat, and the last hope of humanity against the BAD DOGS. The Commando is armed not only with a sunny disposition and soft, cuddly form, but a customized AK-47 and a thirst for the blood of the BAD DOGS as unquenchable as it is cute.
Commissioned Art by Thore Tomasen.
Kamikaze
Canines
The ultimate weapon of the BAD DOGS, these cybernetic monstrosities are intensely loyal, single minded, and able to sniff out humans and their treats from 50 miles. Buried in their tongues is a triggering mechanism: one lick on a human's face will cause a unit to explode, taking out every living thing with a 10-foot radius.
Commissioned Art by Thore Tomasen.
Storyboards
The narrative spelled out in these storyboards represent KC's opening cutscene, which would play whenever the app is opened from a completely closed state. The scenes themselves would be presented in a semi-animated still shot state, similar to narrative cutscenes found in console games of the 80s and 90s.
User Flow Diagrams
On loading of the title, users will be brought to this title screen, where they will have the options to tap "Start" to begin a game, or "Shop," where they can use microtransactions to buy and equip new cosmetic skins for both the Commando and the Canines.
On the start of a new game, the user will be taken to the following screen. The touchable play area (bound in the diagram by a red box) is the area that Kamikaze Canines will travel and can be fired at by the Commando, spawning off screen. If a Canine reaches the Commando, the game is over.
Below the play area is the "dead zone," an area where no Canines will spawn or travel, and will not offer touch interaction, outside of the pause button in the lower right hand corner, a position selected as the majority of people are right handed. This will prevent accidental interaction with the pause function during play.
As the game progresses, Canines will spawn and fly in from off screen, on a direct course for the Commando.
Users will tap a point on the screen that they wish to fire a shot, attempting to intercept the Canine with a shot. If the shot connects, the Canine is destroyed. After a set number of Canines have been defeated, the game will automatically progress to the next stage. As the stage number increases, the speed and number of Canines will increase, and their size will decrease.
The goal is to not be overwhelmed by Canines and progress to the highest stage the player can.
